"My body could stand the crutches, but my mind couldn't stand the sidelines," - Michael Jordan.
Injuries are one of the most difficult challenges athletes face and sadly are common and almost always inevitable. Even though many athletes receive incredible treatment and medical attention for their injury's many people overlook the psychological effects the injury has on the athlete.
Throughout my research so far in ISM I have noticed that a recurring concern in athletes includes the question of how soon they can return to play. For most athletes sports is not only a source of income and living but also a source of happiness. Injuries can prevent athletes from playing the sport they love for long periods of time and sometimes indefinitely, and this can have negative effects on athletes' psychological well being. During my research this week in ISM the most shocking piece of information I learned regarded Re-injury Anxiety, an athlete's fear of re-injury which hinders their ability to return to their sport post injury. I realized that in Sports Medicine there is such a heavy focus on sports injuries and procedures, which makes sense because it is important to treat the athletes; however there is not much research about the psychology behind injuries in athletes. I believe that this is a very important aspect of Sports Medicine that has a heavy impact on athletes wellbeing and performance and should not be overlooked. This week in ISM I wasn't planning to research psychology as it relates to Sports Medicine, however, my research led me to discover many interesting statistics and evidence, which I included in my Annotated Bibliography. Overall, this was a very exciting topic to research, and I am grateful that I had the opportunity to learn some of this information through ISM.
