Sports Medicine. If someone had asked me two years ago "what I want to do when I grow up" I probably never would have said Sports Medicine. That is not because I didn't enjoy it, but rather because I didn't have any knowledge about this field. I only recently discovered Sports Medicine and it was during my championship basketball game. It was a challenging and intense game, and in basketball -like all sports- sadly injuries are common and sometimes inevitable. An interesting thing I discovered is that yes the initial pain from the injury hurts; but once that wears off, the inability to play the sport you love hurts so much more.
It's difficult to ride a bench for a season
Watch your teammates celebrate each win
And go home after each game knowing you couldn't be out on the court that day.
I want to become a Sports Medicine physician because I want to help athletes continue playing the sport they love and experience the happiness that comes with that. Being an athlete, I can empathize with those feelings, having felt some of them myself. This has allowed me to grasp the true importance of this field and the change it can bring to people's lives. I want to be a part of that journey.
We started researching and right now, I focused on learning more about the different types of cases Sports Medicine Physicians treat, and the different sub fields. I just have to say that Sports Medicine is a really fun and interesting field. There are so many different patients, athletes, cases, and injuries physicians treat. You can deal with psychological aspects, physical therapy, nutrition, sprains and basic pains, and even do orthopedic surgery on things like torn ACL's. You can even become a team doctor for a professional sports team! That would be a real dream come true, if you ask me. In my future research I would like to research more about the orthopedic surgery side because that is something I don't know a lot about yet.
I don't know which field I might want to pursue or where I might go with Sports Medicine, but I am really excited to continue my research and see where my ISM journey will take me!
