As I have begun to narrow down my research I have determined I want to focus more on ACL surgery and reconstruction. However, this week I focused specifically on wearable devices and technology used in Sports Medicine. One key thing I learned was that Accelerometers or Gyroscopes are beneficial for athletes to use because it can estimate the athletes energy expenditure and intensity in training. This device is helpful for Sports Medicine Physicians because it can accurately determine the intensity of the athletes training, thus allowing the physician and athlete to take the proper precautions to prevent injuries.
Technology has had a huge impact on the world, and has changed the world of physical therapy and sports medicine as well. New rehabilitation techniques have sped up recovery time and as a result return to play time in many professional and high school athletes has increased. I have noticed that return to play is probably the most important factor to consider in Sports Medicine. Since technology is affecting this factor in both positive and negative ways, I thought it was especially important for me to research it a little bit. Even though I am beginning to narrow my research down and focus on ACL, I wanted to use this time to gain some background and basic knowledge about new advancements in technology that are altering the world of Sports Medicine.
