I found my mentor!! I am so excited to finally be able to say that yes I was able to find my mentor for Orthopedic Sports Medicine in ISM this year.
Last week I messaged Dr. Robertson and he agreed to be my mentor this year and I am very excited to work with him. I enjoyed our interview a while ago and I think that this is such a fantastic opportunity to learn about Orthopedic Sports Medicine. He is also the team doctor for the Dallas Stars so I am excited to be able to see this career from not only the hospital and clinic side, but also in regards to what it's like being a team doctor.
I remember from our previous interview learning about how hockey injuries are unique because of how different the actual sport is from others. I didn’t know much about hockey injuries yet, so I wanted to research more about it in class. As a result, last week I wrote my research assessment over the most common hockey injuries. It was honestly very interesting to see how much it truly does differ from other sports injuries. One of the most common injuries was upper extremity injuries and mostly shoulder dislocations. However, there are also many injuries that come from getting hit with a puck traveling at speeds greater than 100mph and getting body checked into the boards. Overall, it was a really interesting topic, and I am very excited to be able to start my next journey in ISM: shadowing my mentor and getting to learn about what this career looks like in real life.
