Meeting the Professionals

Monday, October 9th, 2023

Last week I shifted my focus from mainly research to preparing for the ISM Business Symposium. This was a very beneficial event, and I gained a lot of knowledge about various things including networking skills, interviewing, discussing my topic, and social media marketing.

My research throughout ISM has helped me prepare for this symposium specifically regarding discussing information about Sports Medicine. However, at the symposium I personally did not meet any sports medicine physicians or doctors in general. I mainly met business owners, project managers, entrepreneurs, and professionals in finance. As a result, I focused more on how I interact and talk with business professionals rather than just discussing my topic.

One thing that I realized was that a lot of jobs are changing and adapting to using new AI technology features. Many business professionals talked a lot about how AI is changing their field, and how students should be knowledgeable about how it might change their chosen field for ISM. This was really interesting to me because I did not research a lot about technology in Sports Medicine, however I think that is something I should learn more about.

The interviews were beneficial because they helped me understand where I need to improve and overall just practice interviewing with professionals. However, I enjoyed the social media marketing, original work, and ISM alumni class the most. These classes were all taught by current or past ISM students, who mainly discussed their ISM experiences. I really enjoyed how they gave us advice and tips on how to be successful in ISM. I learned about how to improve my digital portfolio, connect with professionals on linkedIn, do cold and warm calls, and even ideas on what to do for my Original Work project.

At the Symposium, not only did I get to practice engaging and interacting with business professionals, but also tips and tricks on how to be a successful student in ISM. Overall, this was a very cool and beneficial experience, and I am so grateful to have been able to participate and learn from it.
